SharePoint announcements web part
SPHub's announcements module is a SharePoint announcements web part that shows company news from one SharePoint list in your own Microsoft 365 tenant, newest first, with each card tinted by its priority and opening to the full text. A setup wizard creates that list with three fields of its own, and the SPHub home page that setup builds carries the web part.
This page describes what the module's code does and, where it matters, what it does not do. The module has no forms or views of its own: announcements are written as items in the list, and the web part displays them.
The list the setup wizard creates
The setup wizard creates one SharePoint list for announcements, named Corporate Announcements, with three custom fields beside SharePoint's own Title.
Fields in the announcements list
type and values- PriorityChoice: Low, Normal, High, Urgent; new items start as Normal
- Announcement ContentRequired. Multiple lines of rich text
- Expiry DateA date without a time; the web part does not read it, as covered below
The column names and choice values are created in English. Setup adds the three fields to the default view of a new list and, on an empty list only, four sample announcements, so the web part is not blank on day one.
What the web part shows
The web part shows the list's items as cards, newest first by creation date.
-
The card
Each card shows the announcement's title, its creation date and its author. The cards scroll inside a panel of fixed height, so a long list does not stretch the page.
-
Priority tint
A card's tint comes from its Priority value, and Low, Normal, High and Urgent each have their own. The tint is the only sign of priority, because the card does not print the word.
-
The full announcement
Clicking a card, or pressing Enter or Space on it, opens the full announcement in a dialog. The dialog shows the title, the creation date, the content and the author, with a Close button, and unsafe HTML is removed from the content before it is shown.
-
Dates and messages
Dates are the item's creation date, written as day, month and year separated by dots. An empty list shows “No announcements yet.”, and a failed load shows an error message in place of the cards.
Choosing the list and the look
The web part's property pane has a list dropdown and an Appearance group, and the list defaults to Corporate Announcements.
-
The list
The dropdown offers the visible lists on the site that are built from SharePoint's generic custom list template. The web part requests each item's title, priority, content, creation date and author by field name, so a different list should carry fields named
PriorityandAnnouncementContent. -
Appearance
The Appearance group offers a theme preset (follow the site theme, Vibrant or Red), a brand colour, corner radius, density, colour mode and an optional custom stylesheet URL. A colour or preset set here overrides the site-wide setting, and once a brand colour is set the pane has no control to clear it.
-
The home page
The SPHub home page that setup creates already carries an announcements web part. Unless you pick another list, it reads
Corporate Announcements. -
Microsoft Teams
The web part can be added as a Teams tab.
What the announcements module does not do
The announcements module displays posts and nothing more: it has no expiry, no ordering by priority, no approval step and no email.
-
Expiry
The Expiry Date field hides nothing. The web part neither requests that field nor filters by date, so an announcement stays in the web part until its item is deleted from the list.
-
Order
Cards are ordered by creation date alone. A High or Urgent announcement does not move above a newer Normal one.
-
Approval and email
Announcements have no approval step, no recycle bin of SPHub's own and no notification email. The module is not one of the eleven that send email.
-
Forms, views and settings
The module has no forms or views of its own, no entry in the site menu and no section on the SPHub Settings page. Like the other display modules, it is edited with SharePoint's own page editor and list items.
Where the data lives and who can see it
Announcements live in the Corporate Announcements list on your own SharePoint site, an ordinary list you can open, export, back up and audit; where SPHub stores your data covers the whole product.
-
Your permissions apply
SPHub adds no permission model of its own, so SharePoint's permissions on the list decide who can read announcements and who can post them.
-
Graph permissions
This module uses none of the three Graph permissions. It reads the list through SharePoint's own REST interface and sends no email.
How you get it
Announcements ships inside SPHub, and every SPHub plan includes every web part.
-
Created by the setup wizard
Announcements is not one of the modules you pick: setup creates its list on every install, and the home page it builds carries the announcements web part. The install page has the steps.
-
One licence, every web part
No plan ships fewer web parts. Pricing is per user and falls with headcount, and the pricing page lists the five bands.
-
The other modules
Announcements is one of the 27 web parts; the web parts page names the rest.
Questions about SPHub announcements
Where announcements are written, how long they stay and what a priority does are the three details answered below.
-
Where do I write an announcement?
You write an announcement as a new item in the
Corporate Announcementslist, with a title and the announcement content. SPHub has no form of its own for it, and Priority and Expiry Date are optional. -
Do announcements expire?
No: the list has an Expiry Date field, but the web part does not read it, so an announcement keeps showing until its item is deleted.
-
What happens to a priority value I add or rename?
A card whose priority is not Low, Normal, High or Urgent gets the Normal tint. The match is by name and ignores case, so a renamed value loses its own tint.
Other SPHub module pages
Announcements is not the only SPHub module with a page of its own: annual leave, expenses, travel requests, asset management, issue tracking, birthdays and vehicle assignment each have one.
